Several police officers and firefighters were surprised by an explosion in a Rating high-rise building near Düsseldorf on Thursday and some were seriously injured. After hours of operation, special police forces finally stormed the stricken apartment and arrested the apartment owner, police spokesmen reported. According to NRW Interior Minister Herbert Reul, the police found a body in his apartment.
The minister was initially unable to say anything about the identity. According to the police, the 57-year-old homeowner was taken to hospital with “serious injuries”. According to a police spokeswoman, it was not initially possible to say whether he was injured in the explosion or during the arrest.
On Thursday around 11.15 am, according to the police, there was an explosion in an apartment in the high-rise building in Ratingen near Düsseldorf. Reul said ten firefighters and two police officers were injured, some seriously. Whether it was a targeted attack, he could not say.
Man supposedly from the corona denier environment
Background and cause of the explosion initially remained unclear. Reul said social media investigations had shown the man was “mentally in the corona-denying milieu”. According to Reul, emergency services were called to a “helpless person” on the tenth floor of the residence. The police then called the fire brigade on site to open the door.
A mother lives with her son in the apartment. There was a fire in the room. The son caused an explosion with an object that has not yet been identified. He held something against the emergency services at the door – that’s when the blast or blast happened.
Lots of popping sounds
The situation remained unclear for hours after the explosion, special forces and snipers were on the scene. Countless creaking noises could be heard over and over again. The scene was cordoned off over a large area. Smoke billowed from an apartment on the top floor of the skyscraper. About four hours after the blast, the special forces finally stormed the apartment.
