At least six people have been killed in a fire at a hostel in the New Zealand capital Wellington. Some 30 more were missing, it said Tuesday evening (local time). Nick Pyatt of the fire department spoke of his “worst nightmare” after surgery.
The building can accommodate 92 guests. It is not known how many people were in the house at the time of the fire. Photos showed how the fire brigade extinguished the fire on turntable ladders from the outside at night. Five people were rescued from the roof by the emergency services. It is not yet known why the fire broke out.
It is possible that the death toll could rise further. “It is with regret that I can report that this is a multiple fatality incident. Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased at this time,” said Pyatt.
