Chaotic conditions – persistent rain: nine dead in northern Italy

Date:

Nine people have been killed in severe storms in northern Italy. More than 10,000 people in the affected region of Emilia Romagna have been evacuated. The fire brigade went out again and again to rescue people from flooded buildings.

Between Tuesday and Wednesday alone, 21 rivers burst their banks, flooding 36 cities and communities. Local authorities reported landslides and extensive damage, especially in the area of the port city of Ravenna. Several homes and businesses were evacuated due to the risk of flooding.

Those affected were temporarily housed in sports halls. The Ravenna City Council and local police urged residents near rivers to move to the upper floors. In the small town of Castel Bolognese, several people were also taken from their homes. There were problems with the drinking water supply, so the water was distributed with a tank truck.

50,000 people without power
According to the region’s vice president Irene Priolo, more than 10,000 people had to evacuate their homes and apartments and 50,000 were without power on Wednesday. There were train delays, which affected, among other things, the high-speed trains on the north-south Milan-Rome axis. There, too, the road network came to a standstill.

The Grand Prix Formula 1 of Imola was canceled due to the storm, but a concert by the American rock star Bruce Springsteen (in a park in Ferrara) that was scheduled for Thursday evening was cancelled. 50,000 visitors are expected.

The government under Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wants to help the flooded area. A decision on support of at least ten million euros will be made next Tuesday. Measures against landslides and floods are also discussed.
