Continuous rain with consequences – houses in Tyrol cut off, collapsed

Date:

Due to heavy rainfall and a completely soaked slope, part of the municipality of Schwendau in the Tyrolean Zillertal has been closed off from the outside world for several weeks and can only be reached on foot. The only way there has literally collapsed. An emergency facility is provided via the air route.

The disaster began in early May when large cracks appeared in the road leading to the Kleinschwendberg district. Due to the heavy rainfall of recent times, the road must have literally subsided due to the large amount of water. “The situation has steadily deteriorated. The road had to be closed on Sunday for safety reasons,” Mayor Franz Hauser told the “Krone”.

30 residents affected
The district is therefore closed off from the outside world and can only be reached on foot. Three single family homes and four farms are included. “A total of about 30 residents have been affected,” Hauser continued.

Emergency supply by air
Care for those affected is insured. In extreme cases, emergency aid – such as rescue operations – will be carried out by air. The residents of Kleinschwendberg will probably have to deal with this situation for a long time to come.

According to Mayor Hauser, slope stabilization work will be carried out from Monday. This can take three to four weeks.
