Driving bans in Tyrol – traffic jams are also slowed down in summer

Date:

Tyrol is once again taking measures for holiday traffic: To prevent passers-by from leaving the motorway or main routes in traffic jams and clogging up the low-level road network, so-called exit bans will apply again this summer. The starting shot is already next Pentecost weekend.

At Pentecost, one of the busiest weekends of the year is just around the corner – huge car avalanches will once again roll over Tyrol’s main traffic routes such as Fernpass and Seefelder Straße, Inntal and Brennerautobahn in the direction of Lake Garda or the Adriatic Sea. In the coming months – especially during the summer holidays – that will not be much different.

maintain security of supply
The state of Tyrol is therefore once again relying on exit bans to at least protect the low-level road network against traffic chaos. This means: Leaving the main routes on the lower road network is also prohibited in traffic jams or slow-moving traffic – with the exception of destination, source or destination traffic. The aim is to maintain security of supply in the communities.

Navis show alternatives
Background to the driving bans: To avoid traffic jams on the main routes, navigation systems often show small municipal roads or through towns as potentially faster alternatives. The result is congested roads in and around cities.

“These measures have proven themselves in Tyrol since 2019 – both in summer and winter. Last summer, around 73,000 vehicles were rejected. This shows how important the exit bans are to ensure safety on local roads in Tyrol” , emphasizes Governor Anton Mattle (ÖVP).

Land yields 172,000 euros
This summer, too, the exit bans will be checked by the police and checked at critical points by road safety officers. The state of Tyrol is making some 172,000 euros available for this.

In addition, a truck block handling will be carried out on May 26 and 27, because the Pentecost weekend is “a big challenge” according to transport councilor René Zumtobel (SPÖ). “In addition to the heavy tourist traffic, we also expect a lot of transit trucks, which is why we are taking all measures at our disposal. The metering reduces the flow of trucks to the south to ensure the best possible traffic flow in the Innsbruck region and on the Brenner motorway and to avoid large-scale traffic congestion,” says Zumtobel.
