For new F-16 jets? – Ukraine asked Germany for Taurus cruise missiles

Date:

After figures were first given on Friday about how many F-16 fighter jets Ukraine would like to receive from the West, the following demand has now become public: according to a newspaper report, Germany had been asked to supply the German Taurus cruise missile.

According to a report in the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sunday newspaper”, the German Ministry of Defense confirmed Ukraine’s request. No one would comment on whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy personally addressed this request to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), as the paper’s information suggested.

Taurus cruise missiles have a range of up to 500 kilometers. They are dropped from fighter jets and find their targets themselves. The missile can fly under the radar. It is considered an effective weapon against protected targets such as command bunkers or ammunition depots.

Cruise missiles for US F-16?
In an interview with the “FAS”, foreign politicians Roderich Kiesewetter (CDU) and Michael Roth (SPD), chairman of the foreign affairs committee in the German Bundestag, argue that Germany should stop deliveries of F-16 fighter jets from the US to Ukraine, for example through education. According to Kiesewetter, Berlin could contribute to the armament of the F-16 via Taurus. Experts assured him that it was not “missile science” to adapt the German cruise missile to the American F-16.

Ukraine wants 48 F-16 fighter jets
According to the Ministry of Defense in Kiev, Ukraine expects 48 F-16 fighter jets to free itself from Russian occupation. “Four squadrons of F-16s (48 aircraft) are exactly what we need to rid our country of the aggressor,” the ministry said on Friday.
