The crime took place late Friday afternoon at the Plaza Hollywood shopping mall in the Diamond Hill neighborhood of eastern Kowloon. The perpetrator first bought a knife 30 centimeters long and fifteen minutes later stabbed a 22-year-old woman from behind several times, Hong Kong media reported about the course of events.
Security camera footage published on the Internet apparently shows the brutal killings. The 26-year-old companion of the first victim tried to fight off the assailant, who also stabbed her. Other customers fled to safety behind the glass doors of the stores and watched. Prime Minister John Lee, appointed by China, called on the public not to distribute the video recordings.
The two victims were taken to United Christian Hospital unconscious, according to police, and after arriving at 6:06 p.m. and 6:47 p.m., the two were pronounced dead. According to media reports, overall crime in Hong Kong increased by 48.4 percent in the first quarter of this year compared to the same period last year.
