A high school graduation ceremony in the US state of Virginia ended in tragedy on Tuesday. After the official portion at a theater, as graduates and their families gathered in a park in Richmond, an armed man suddenly opened fire. An 18-year-old student and a 36-year-old man died in the hail of bullets. Seven other people were injured.
The background to the incident in the capital of Virginia is still unclear. Initially, the police arrested two suspects. Moments later, one of them was released. The suspect is a 19-year-old man, police said. “We believe the suspect knew at least one of the victims,” police commissioner Rick Edwards told media representatives.
Girl (9) fled and was hit by a car
According to American media, one of the injured is a nine-year-old girl who fled from the danger zone and was hit by a car. Three off-duty police officers were present as security at the celebrations and responded immediately. Officials called to seal off the immediate area and were able to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
All graduation ceremonies at the Altria Theater have been canceled until further notice. This is for safety reasons, as stated by the Richmond Public Schools Association.
