Trump has denounced prosecutions against him and has accused Democrats of meddling in the election. “I never thought such a thing was possible It could happen to a former president of the United States who has received more votes than any other president in the history of our country,” Trump posted on social media, insisting that he is “innocent.”
Trump is being charged in a Miami court seven federal crimesincluding illegal withholding of government secrets, obstruction of justice and conspiracy, as reported by major national media outlets.
The president has explained on his social networks what he has been summoned for appear in Miami Federal Court next Tuesday at 15:00 local time (19:00 GMT).
However, the court document has not yet been officially released and the Justice Department has avoided commenting on the case. In a video posted to Truth Social, Trump has directly criticized the Justice Department and the FBIto which he points out that they are being exploited by the current government.
“Is called interference in the elections“They are trying to destroy my reputation in order to win the election (…) they are going for me because I lead the polls,” the former president assured.
This is the second time Trump faces criminal chargeswho in turn is the first president in the country’s history to be impeached.
In April of this year, the Republican was indicted by a New York court on 34 counts related to payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Thursday’s indictment is part of an investigation led by special counsel Jack Smith into Trump’s handling of hundreds of classified documents found by the FBI at his Florida mansion.
As part of the investigation, several close relatives of the former president and former White House officials have been called to testify by the Justice Department.
Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November to handle this case while developing another investigation into Trump’s role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
