Cameroon’s media regulator has threatened to shut down TV channels broadcasting “gay scenes”. In a message entitled “Warning” on Tuesday, the authority called for “immediate removal from the program of those programs that violate the law, the good manners and customs of our country”, otherwise the “suspension of the media concerned” is threatened.
Content the authority describes as “promoting homosexual practices” is “increasingly found in cartoons for children and minors,” the media regulator CDC explained – “particularly on foreign broadcasters.”
Same-sex sex is illegal in Cameroon
In Cameroon, same-sex sex is punishable by up to five years in prison. In May last year, the human rights organization Human Rights Watch accused the Cameroonian government of criminalizing homosexuality by creating a climate “in which Cameroonians and security forces allow themselves to attack and abuse people from the LGBTQ+ community with impunity.”
The nine members of the media regulator are directly appointed by decree from 90-year-old President Paul Biya, who has ruled the country with an iron fist for more than 40 years.
