Great excitement and horror after an incident at a school in Upper Styria: a young marten was killed by an employee in front of young people; the school confirms the incident and “regrets”.
Active animal welfare got things going: “We are shocked by this lack of empathy,” spokeswoman Katharina Gründl said. “We also spoke to some young eyewitnesses – they are traumatized.”
A marten apparently entered the courtyard of a school in Upper Styria last week, where several young people were also present at the time. A school employee then grabbed a stick and at first only wanted to chase the animal away.
“animal screamed pitifully”
Two versions follow. According to one of them, the woman allegedly cornered the animal on the stairs so that it had no escape route – and then beat it until the marten was dead. Gründl: “Frightened young people told us that the animal was screaming pathetically.”
The Styrian, asked for an explanation by the “Krone”, describes that she wanted to drive the marten away, drove him out of the bushes into which he had fled and confirmed that she had killed him. However, she insists she acted in self-defense. “He jumped at me, wanted to bite me. I just resisted, hit it once and it was there.
“There were other options”
“You can never just kill an animal,” explains animal protection ombudswoman Barbara Fiala-Köck. “There would have been other options. How easy is it to put a basket over him and ask for help.” First of all, self-defense should be proven. The carcass itself has in any case been immediately disposed of as animal waste and is therefore no longer available.
A photo of the alleged victim was passed on to us. Monika Großmann, an expert from the association Small Wild Animals in Great Need, recognizes a young animal, “which was certainly still nursing. It must have somehow ended up or fallen into the courtyard, looking for its mother. They would have received it too, as soon as the peace had been tempered.”
Complaint for animal cruelty
The school principal confirms and regrets the “unfortunate incident” and insists that it is not a teacher. The woman is now reported by Active Animal Welfare for animal abuse.
