The child pornography scandal surrounding Florian Teichtmeister overshadowed the Austrian film prize. “Corsage” has won four trophies – a new trial date is still pending.
Audience recruiting, working conditions, equality, outcry over government deals: you might think the battles on the big screen are the big ones, but the film industry’s struggles off-set are great too.
One seems to have an almost overwhelming opponent with the subject of abuse of power in the industry, which also kept the “Austrian Film Prize 2023” in suspense at the Vienna Globe on Thursday.

Film prize chairman Verena Altenberger shared critical comments on Twitter in advance: “He does not choose the Academy as an institute, but the members (598 in number). They also determine who will be nominated in the pre-selection process.”
The strip was not ruled out “after intensive deliberation”, but a position was taken: “Teichtmeister is a prominent case, but unfortunately by no means an isolated case. The statistics that have come to light as a result of the current debate over the past few weeks , are an ultimate call for us to act, we need to face this issue both as a cultural sector and as a society.”
They did not want to present the cause – Marie Kreutzer’s “Corsage” won in four categories (“Best female lead”, “Best camera”, “Best costume and make-up image”) – “not without comment and use the publicity , the subject violence (not only) to bring even more attention to children”.
Some 30 demonstrators loudly expressed their displeasure for the event venue for “playing down child abuse”.
