The planned amendment to the sex criminal law is further delayed. A decision in the National Council is no longer possible before the summer.
As reported, “Corsage” received four awards at the Austrian Film Awards on Thursday night. There was criticism and a (manageable) demonstration for the Vienna Globe. As a reminder: “Corsage” protagonist Florian Teichtmeister is involved in a child pornography scandal. He is said to have hoarded no less than 58,000 files that show sexual abuse of minors. The presumption of innocence applies to the 43-year-old.
First great excitement, then criticism and stagnation
After the “Krone” got the case rolling in the fall of 2021, the call for tougher sentences was not long in coming. There is also a demand for targeted prevention and improvement of victim protection. Politicians promised to act quickly.
The review period for the accompanying bill expired in mid-May and dozens of critical statements were received. These have not yet been processed, so the package can no longer be decided before the summer. According to the Ministry of Justice, talks with relevant organizations – such as the Nieuwe Start association – are still necessary. In any case, the criticism expressed should be taken seriously.
Teichtmeister trial put on hold
In general, the judiciary does not cut a very good figure around the case. Aside from the fact that the amendment to the Penal Code is still on hold, the mime still hasn’t sat in court. His trial was to take place in early February, when Teichtmeister was “acutely ill”.
He could now stand trial again, but the responsible judge had ordered further investigation, the results of which were received at the end of May. According to the court, they have now been sent to the public prosecutor’s office and the defense for “knowledge and opportunity”. That is why a new hearing date is long overdue.
