The wildfire in Northern California has already burned more than 140,000 hectares of land. In the city of Chico alone, more than 4,000 people had to flee the flames. On Sunday, firefighters were still far from able to get the intense fires under control (see video above).
“The extreme fire conditions continue to challenge firefighters,” Cal Fire said. More than 4,000 structures are threatened by the flames and at least 20 have already been damaged. The numbers could rise in the coming days.
“I don’t want anyone else to go through this,” said resident Ava Elsner, who lived through a fire six years ago. “It’s the most traumatic, horrible, saddest thing when an entire community goes up in flames.” More than 4,000 people have already fled their homes and a new evacuation plan has been issued.
The wildfire broke out Wednesday near Chico. It is said to have been put out. On Thursday, police arrested a 42-year-old suspect who allegedly pushed a burning car into a ravine, starting the fire.
Only ten percent under control
3,700 firefighters with helicopters and planes were already deployed to extinguish the blaze. However, according to the latest information, only ten percent was under control. Lower temperatures and higher humidity have at least reduced “fire activity”, the authority said.
In the neighboring US state of Oregon, a large fire has now destroyed more than 117,000 hectares. The fire there has been contained for 50 percent so far. On Friday, a pilot crashed with his firefighting plane and died.
