Also this year the rainbow parade will take place around the Wiener Ring. It is one of the highlights of Vienna Pride 2023. Thousands of people are already marching on the Ring to demonstrate together for acceptance, respect and equal rights in Austria, Europe and around the world. The police have already taken the first precautions to prevent any disruptive actions during the parade in time.
Vienna Pride 2023 will take place from 1 to 18 June. The highlight is the rainbow parade, where thousands of people gathered at 11 a.m. at the town hall square to demonstrate from 1 p.m. in the opposite direction across the entire ring road and celebrate together.
“Pride Celebration” from 6 p.m
The route goes via the Parliament, over the Heldenplatz to the University of Vienna and from there back to Rathausplatz, where the closing meeting will take place around 18:00. The so-called Pride Celebration is held with speeches by activists and politicians.
“The Pride Celebration begins with the moment of remembrance, where we pause for a minute to remember those who can no longer be with us because they have died of HIV/AIDS or are the victims of sexual orientation or gender identity of a violent crime. ”, the organizers explain on their website.
Therefore, a permanent closure of the ring road between Operngasse and Franz Josefs Kai was imposed from 10 a.m. and will last until 7 p.m. The rainbow parade is expected to last until 10 p.m.
Potentially disruptive actions
The police has about 700 emergency services on site. The police also expect several public disturbance actions this year. A meeting of potential conflicting parties with a high police presence should be avoided. In the past, for example, the FPÖ criticized the event.
„Enemies of cosmopolitanism”
Vice Mayor Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS) reported on an incident in advance. “Enemies of cosmopolitanism have painted the city’s logo black,” he wrote on Twitter. “We acted quickly and made the rainbow shine again. We will not be intimidated” and they want to celebrate “the diversity at the rainbow parade”.
Political demonstration
The Rainbow Parade is one of the largest political demonstrations in Vienna, campaigning for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people.
