An American adventurer has been rescued by an oil tanker in the South Pacific. Aaron Carotta left South America in his rowboat and got into distress. However, because he had already issued a distress signal on May 31, the search for Carotta had already been abandoned.
The fact that he was found is due to an American plane that happened to be nearby for another search. It discovered the boat east of the Marquesas Islands in an area of the sea where hardly any ships sail. The nearest ship, the oil tanker Baker Spirit, was 240 miles away. After making contact, it changed route and was able to rescue Carotta 18 hours later.
Only circumnavigation planned
It is scheduled to land in Honolulu on June 25. Carotta set out alone from South America to circumnavigate the world in his rowing boat “Smiles”. In the South Pacific, the man finally got into distress. From there he sent out a distress signal on May 31. His rowing boat had been overturned by a wave and he was able to board his lifeboat. However, communication has been broken. Five merchant ships and four pleasure craft abandoned the search on 12 June.
After that, however, another distress signal was received from the “Smiles”. According to the French Polynesian authorities, a US plane spotted Aaron Carotta in his lifeboat on Friday.
