Thousands of people protested in London on Saturday to relax abortion laws. Among other things, they demanded the release of a woman who had lied about the status of her pregnancy in order to receive an abortion drug in the mail.
Carla Forster was sentenced on Monday to two years and four months in prison, but half of her sentence was suspended. “Release Carla Forster,” protesters demanded in London on Saturday, referring to women’s right to self-determination. The 44-year-old is already a mother of three and was sent an abortion medication by a pregnancy counseling center during the lockdown. Forster was 32-34 weeks pregnant at the time, but lied about the condition.
In England, Wales and Scotland, abortion is legal up to the 24th week. The time limit is therefore longer than in Austria. In Germany, an abortion within the first three months is not a criminal offence. Exceptional cases of later abortions are, for example, when the pregnant woman is young (less than 14 years old), her life is in serious danger, or the child is likely to be born with a mental or physical disability.
Statistically, as in the case of Carla Forster, it is mainly women who already have children who have an abortion. Yet the prejudice is often heard that it is mainly young people.
