Dam destroyed – Kremlin: flood area not safe enough for access

Date:

The Russian government has confirmed it will not allow UN workers into the floodplain south of Ukraine’s destroyed Kakhovka dam. The reason given was the security situation. “It’s all very difficult,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Monday.

“It is difficult to guarantee their safety and many other nuances,” he explained. As previously reported, the United Nations had complained that it was denied access to the Russian-occupied flood plains. He doesn’t know the details, Peskow said. At the same time, he blamed the enemy. It is very difficult to get to the Moscow-controlled Dnipro bank from the Ukrainian side. “There is constant shelling, constant provocation, civilian objects, people and the population are being shot at. People are dying,” Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman said.

Shots at helpers?
The Ukrainian side, in turn, accuses the Russians of hindering their rescue operations in the flooded area and even shooting at helpers. The Kachowka Dam was destroyed almost two weeks ago (see video above). The outflowing water from the reservoir has flooded dozens of towns, especially in the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson. So far, 52 fatalities are known. Some drowned, some were shot, according to Ukrainian sources. The Ministry of Civil Defense reported more than 8,000 evacuated people in the area on Monday morning.

The water level near the flooded city of Kherson is now almost back to normal. According to the Ukrainian rescue team on its Telegram channel, the water at Kherson on Monday was only about 0.5 meters higher than before the flood. At the peak, the level in Kherson was more than 5.5 meters above normal. Despite the decrease in water, 22 settlements would remain under water.
