Gigantic hailstorms, thunderstorms and gusts of wind: weather experts had already predicted “the heaviest storm in recent years” for us on Tuesday. It should be ready by Wednesday afternoon. Here’s where and when it first erupts in the country and how to behave in sudden storms:
The first warm day with 30 degrees Celsius or even more was a long time coming this year. Last Sunday it was time. But with the first heat wave, the chance of severe weather also increases.
The center of gravity of the storm is in the west
While it was sunny and hot like summer throughout the country on Wednesday morning, the first rain and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon. At the moment you can still see a blue sky in Tyrol. So far it has also remained dry in Vorarlberg, Salzburg and Upper Austria. But that should change quickly during the day: because the center of gravity of the storm is in the west and south of Austria.
In addition, the air above Austria warms up to 34 degrees. Thus, the shortness of breath also increases considerably. In the afternoon and evening, the sometimes violent heat thunderstorms will become more numerous and can also move from the mountains to the adjacent flat and hilly country. The greatest risk of thunderstorms is therefore on the following two days, Thursday and Friday: On Thursday, a strip from Vorarlberg to Upper Austria is mainly affected – severe thunderstorms with large hail, heavy rain and gusts of wind threaten here in the second half of the day .
On Friday, the zone with the heaviest thunderstorms will shift more to the south and southeast, otherwise it will already seep from the west already more stable air. Of the incomingN a little cooler and stableis layeredN Neither heat nor severe thunderstorms should then play a role over the weekend.
What to watch out for during a thunderstorm
But what quick precautions can be taken in the event of sudden, violent storms? Especially during hail and thunderstorms, you should go to your house or apartment if possible. Because if there is less than ten seconds between lightning and thunder, you are in the immediate danger zone. All windows and doors should be closed to prevent rainwater ingress or broken glass from gusts of wind. This is especially true for basement windows and skylights.
In case of hail, park the car in the garage if necessary. Remove items from the garden or balcony that could be damaged by storm or hail. If possible, postpone showers and baths until after the thunderstorm. If the thunderstorm is particularly severe, unplug electrical appliances to protect them from indirect lightning strikes. Don’t start cleaning up until the storm is really over.
