A white-headed saki was born in the house of the sea. It is the first offspring of Gaby and Karl.
When the female came to Vienna in early November, she held back, and the male also kept his distance for a long time. But the relationship between the two grew stronger over time and became more and more intimate. The hope of posterity grew and is now fulfilled.
Baby is already making area unsafe
After about 170 days of gestation, the time had come on May 28. In the new tropical house you can already see the baby climbing on mom. “The birth of the white-headed saki is a special event for us! At first I was afraid that the young Saki lady would abandon her little one, but Gaby masters her duties as a new mother very well,” says Jeff Schreiner, the responsible curator of Haus des Meeres.
Native to northeastern South America, white-headed sakis are diurnal and arboreal. The very small monkeys reach a head-body length of only 30 to 48 centimeters and weigh about 1.5 kilograms. In human care, they live up to 35 years.

The Haus des Meeres gives visitors the opportunity to participate in the naming process. The responsible informal carers have five proposed names that can be voted on on the website.
