In the TV interview with Gerhard Koller, co-initiator of the referendum Werner Bolek of the Joint Decisions Initiative makes it clear: “With us you say ‘Neutrality YES!’ for the referendum. sign. What is urgently needed. Because many people and politicians are far from the neutrality of Austria”. A new law is therefore needed that again clearly and unequivocally commits to eternal neutrality.
This requires 100,000 signatures in the referendum, which has until next Monday. Bolek is sure that he will also achieve this goal: “We have already received seven referenda on the signature hurdle and thus made it into parliament. And that also succeeds with the neutrality referendum.”
However, Bolek also admits that he is experiencing a kind of ‘plebiscite bashing’ at the moment: ‘Many politicians prefer to let go of the subject and speak badly of this form of direct democracy. That’s why we do these initiatives.” He also dryly states: “For a long time, a referendum was a kind of ‘second-class funeral’ that disappeared into a drawer after it had been implemented. Now, however, the consequences are becoming increasingly clear.”
