In the heat, the idea of a cop could have saved lives. Because a missing cyclist was so far from a road that he probably wouldn’t have been found for a long time – and he was already dehydrated! The sound of the tracking horn was the solution!
Shortly after 2 p.m., the police in Leonding received a message that a 76-year-old cyclist had lost his way north of the Wilhering clinic in Schönering. The exact position of the cyclist could not initially be determined by the central government agency.
Fortunately, the missing person had his cell phone with him and picked it up when an officer called. The senior stated that he was lying in a field somewhere and had no strength left. Several patrols drove through the vast area, but could not find anyone, not even an abandoned bicycle.
Found in a field
Finally, an officer had an idea that saved the day: The man had to use the tone of the patrol car’s tracking horn as a guide, then announce over the phone if the sound was getting closer or further away. So the horn was used in a similar way to a radar or sonar and the missing person did indeed get closer and officers found him in a field about 600 yards from the nearest road.
The drug addict was immediately watered by officials and taken to a shady spot because he was already dehydrated from the heat and scorching sun. The 76-year-old was then taken to Kepler University Hospital in Linz for a comprehensive examination.
