Styria unharmed – paraglider crashed into tree: call for help with mobile phone

Date:

A Styrian paraglider pilot had bad luck on Sunday. He got stuck in a forest in the municipality of Ebenthal with his rescue parachute and was able to call for help on his mobile phone. Police helicopters and mountain rescue services rushed to help.

The 62-year-old man from the district of Voitsberg (Styria) took off with his paraglider from the officially approved launch site “Micklwiese” in Oberkreuth, in the municipality of Ebenthal near Klagenfurt, around 12:00 p.m. for a training flight. Due to a mistake, the 62-year-old lost control of his paraglider, causing the plane to oversteer and fly into the air.

Made an emergency call with a mobile phone
The Styrian then pulled the rescue parachute and fell into a forest, where it got stuck in a tree about four meters high. The victim was able to make an emergency call with his mobile phone and also forward his coordinates to a mountain rescue colleague.

Luckily unharmed
The Styrian was available by telephone to the officials who had filed the charges. “He stated that he was unharmed and hanging in a tree about four meters above the ground,” the emergency services said. Due to the still unclear location of the downed paraglider, the police helicopter “LIBELLE”, the mountain rescue service in Klagenfurt, which had just returned from a sweaty exercise, and the Alpine police task force AEG.

The man was then found by the police helicopter crew and the rescuers were taken to the scene of the accident. “Fortunately, we were able to free the man from his predicament unharmed and not without danger,” says the mountain rescue service in Klagenfurt. The terrain was very slippery and steep. The crashed paraglider could then be brought down by the police helicopter.
