For months, climate activists of the last generation have regularly been responsible for police actions with their roadblocks. And that costs a lot of money: since the beginning of the year, the costs for national operations have now amounted to around one million euros. More than 400 people involved were arrested.
A total of more than 1,700 advertisements were written during the protests. About 6,000 police officers have been deployed so far. According to a parliamentary question at the end of June, most of the reports and arrests took place in the federal capital.
The LPD Vienna has now developed a routine for dealing with the climate stickers. Accordingly, the deployed officials essentially follow three principles:
- “Stick and let stick” where no one is hindered or disturbed
- “Consistent intervention” where people are at risk or disabled
- “Tough repression”, even if the use of pepper spray is necessary
The emergency services also followed this motto on Wednesday, when climate glue again blocked the Vienna Ringstrasse. With their action, about 20 people caused long traffic jams in the morning traffic.
The activists of the last generation are campaigning for 100 km/h on Austrian highways and stopping new oil and gas drilling.
