The Italian island of Lampedusa is increasingly overrun by large numbers of migrants from North Africa. This poses enormous logistical problems for the aid workers in the first reception center there. More than 3,250 people were counted in the so-called hotspot on Friday, while the camp is actually only equipped for 400 people.
The journalist Sergio Scandura, who specializes in migration in the Mediterranean region, described the occupation of the camp, which is guarded by police and army, as a record.
In the first half of the week, no boats from Tunisia and Libya arrived at Lampedusa due to the somewhat unfavorable weather conditions. However, crossings have increased sharply since the beginning of the week. According to Scandura, more than 4,500 migrants reached the island within 72 hours.
Most of them were caught at sea and brought ashore by Coast Guard ships, Financial Police ships and carabinieri. Some have even made it to the island on their own. In addition, the German rescue ship “Mare*Go” has rescued 41 people from distress at sea and is now taking them to Sicily.
To relieve the hotspot on Lampedusa, the authorities are trying to get as many people as possible to the mainland with ferries or police ships. There they are housed in other migrant camps.
Rome has long criticized Europe for leaving Italy alone with the large number of Mediterranean migrants.
