Israel wants to take “immediate steps” to increase humanitarian aid to war-torn civilians in the Gaza Strip. The port of Ashdod and the Eretz border crossing are temporarily opened.
This will make it easier for aid to reach the northern Gaza Strip, which is particularly affected by food shortages. Aid supplies coming from Jordan through the Kerem Shalom border crossing would also be increased.
“This increased aid will prevent a humanitarian crisis and is essential to ensure the continuation of fighting and achieve the war’s objectives,” Haaretz newspaper quoted the Israeli statement as saying.
US: “Reduce suffering, increase protection for helpers
The announcement came shortly after a phone call between US President Joe Biden and Netanyahu. According to the White House, Biden in the call asked the Israeli head of government to take a series of “specific, concrete and measurable steps” to reduce suffering for people in the Gaza Strip and increase protection for aid workers. Future US policy toward the Gaza Strip depends on how Israel implements these measures, Biden warned.
“Results on site completely inadequate and unacceptable”
The US government believes that Israel’s current measures to protect civilians in the Gaza Strip are inadequate (see video above). “Despite important steps Israel has taken to facilitate aid to the Gaza Strip, the results on the ground have been completely inadequate and unacceptable,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in Brussels on Thursday. There is currently no higher priority than protecting the civilian population and expanding humanitarian aid.
The construction of ports for maritime aid is progressing
The US is sticking to its plans for a temporary port in the sea off the coastal area, even after the deadly airstrike on seven humanitarian workers in the Gaza Strip. The incident did not affect efforts to build the pier to deliver relief supplies by sea. They want to continue with the project as quickly as possible.
