Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin is said to have received 8.8 billion euros from the Russian state. At least that is what a TV presenter of Russian state television claims. Prigozhin is now cut, Dmitry Kissilev said on Sunday.
“He believed that he could revolt both against the Russian Ministry of Defense and against the state and the president himself,” the presenter said in his program about Prigozhin. The feeling of being able to pay for everything has existed since the mercenary operations in Syria and African countries. However, things intensified after the group captured the Ukrainian cities of Soledar and Bakhmut.
According to the moderator, the group around Prigozhin would have received 858 billion rubles (converted about 8.8 billion euros). However, he has not provided any evidence. But the journalist gave a possible reason for the mercenaries’ brief uprising about a week ago: Russia’s Defense Ministry had refused to renew lucrative contracts with Prigozhin’s catering company Concord.
The future of the group is uncertain
A week ago on Saturday, the mercenaries occupied the Russian army headquarters in Rostov-on-Don in southwestern Russia for several hours, then advanced towards Moscow. However, the uprising ended that same night with an agreement that Prigozhin went into exile in Belarus (see video above). Those involved have escaped with impunity and their future seems uncertain.
News sites close to the mercenaries were blocked this week. The Wagner boss has not spoken publicly since Monday.
