As then governor of Styria, Waltraud Klasnic led the disaster relief efforts in Lassing in 1998, staying day and night, comforting the family members and encouraging them not to give up hope. In the “Krone” interview, Klasnic recalls the difficult hours of 25 years ago.
“crown”: Do you still think back to today’s catastrophe?
Waltraud Classic: In life you deal with situations that you think about every day. And Lassing is on my mind every day. In recent years I have kept myself relatively out of the public eye, deliberately because I want to. But when the former mayor of Lassingen announced that he would stop, he said he would like to give me honorary citizenship. There was also a small Lassinger coat of arms for this honorary citizen certificate. And that’s in front of my apartment. But he doesn’t hang, he rests.
