A nightmare for all parents: the car doors slam and lock – and the child and keys are still inside. This happened Monday afternoon in Marchtrenk (Upper Austria). In the sweltering heat, a toddler was trapped in the vehicle. A teddy bear also aided in his rescue.
Around 2.30 pm – in the middle of the afternoon heat – a mother in Marchtrenk sounded the alarm: her toddler was in the car, she herself was outside. And the vehicle was locked, the keys were in it.
Hurry because of the heat
Moments later, two fire engines arrived. Due to the rising temperatures, it was urgent. That is why the emergency services prepared to open the car violently.
“Conrad” helps
“The child didn’t notice it at all,” says Thomas Fraungruber, commander of the FF Marchtrenk, to the “Krone”. During the operation ‘Konrad’, the trauma teddy bear of the fire brigade, kept the trapped child company. A Floriani waved the stuffed animal in front of the window in the car.
Ladder as a brilliant idea
In the end, the mission went well: “We used an extension ladder to access the mother’s apartment through a tilted balcony door,” says Fraungruber. There, the emergency services received the second key to the car, with which the vehicle could eventually be opened. “The car was parked next to a tree and luckily it was cloudy too, so there was no direct sunlight. It was still warm inside, the child was sweating,” the fire chief said.
The toddler survived the incident unharmed. And in the end he even got Teddy “Konrad” as a gift.
