“Struck by truck” – farmer struck by lightning, describes power surge

Date:

One person was also injured in Monday night’s devastating storm. A 33-year-old and his pregnant girlfriend were surprised by the storm on their pasture in the Klagenfurt district. Markus Dolinar tells the “Krone” the moment of shock.

Markus Dolinar and his girlfriend Karin Klammer will never forget this day. “On Monday evening around 8 p.m. we checked the pasture, I wanted to check the electric fence,” says the man from Klagenfurt, who sounds quite battered on the phone.

Electricity went through your fingers
According to Dolinar, a thunderstorm was still a long way off at this point. “It was cloudy and the sun was shining,” continued the 33-year-old. Then everything happened in quick succession, the thunder broke. The moment of fright: The farmer was struck by lightning. “It threw me back about a foot while I was sitting on the floor,” he says, his voice shaky. “The current went through my fingers and right arm. It felt like a truck hit me.”

His girlfriend immediately provided first aid and alerted the emergency services. “Karin is a doctor and knew what to do,” says the Carinthian gratefully and at the same time was afraid for his beloved. “She’s pregnant. This could have ended badly. I’m glad nothing happened to her.”

Lightning struck the gate
Dolinar believes that lightning struck the fence and then hit him because he was leaning on the fence post at the time it struck. The man from Klagenfurt is currently being checked at the Klagenfurt clinic. “You play it safe. I had heart surgery two years ago.”

July 10 is his second birthday. “I’m going to celebrate. I could have died too,” says Dolinar, expressing his gratitude: “The helicopter crew did a great job, especially in this weather. You only appreciate that when you’re doing it yourself.”
