Appearance for the climate – Greta Thunberg raises the middle finger in the EU parliament

Date:

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has been campaigning for the climate for years. No wonder, then, that she was also present in the EU parliament on Wednesday to vote on a far-reaching environmental law to restore nature. And she caused a stir with a clear gesture.

Photos from the EU Parliament show Thunberg accompanied by another young woman sitting in the spectators’ stands. They smile at the camera. While the companion gives her two thumbs up, Thunberg cheekily shows the photographer both middle fingers.

At a protest in front of the EU Parliament on Tuesday, Thunberg loudly proclaimed: “Our message to politicians is to choose nature and people over profit and greed”. The current gesture can possibly be seen as a substantiation of this.

fight for the climate
Five years ago, Thunberg launched the global movement Fridays for Future with her ‘school strike for the climate’. Since then she regularly stands up for her beliefs.

The law must save nature
The renaturation law, passed by a narrow majority on Wednesday, is a central part of the comprehensive “Green Deal” climate protection package, which aims to make the EU climate neutral by 2050. The aim is to improve biodiversity and the CO₂ balance. According to the European Commission, 80 percent of European habitats are in poor condition. According to their ideas, by 2050 there should be more mixed forests and five percent more green in cities. By that time, 70 percent of the drained heathland used for agriculture must also be restored.
