The independent Russian online newspaper “The Insider” offers particularly in-depth insights into the psyche of Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine. Because the medium spoke to Russian sex workers who count Kremlin fighters among their clients – and according to the descriptions, some of them are said to be “disgusting” and “perverted”.
As different as sex work is, so different are the people who do it. On the one hand, there are staunch opponents of the war, on the other, there are supporters of the “military special operation”. There are people who don’t care about politics, for them the most important thing is to have a job.
And then there are those who use Russia’s relentless offensive war for marketing purposes, such as offering discounts to those who have already fought in the war. Some men even ask for price reductions of their own accord. “I have fought and protected the fatherland. So you have to let me do it for free or charge less money for it,” it says.
Deviating Practices
Even perverted rape fetishes can be lived in Russia right now. Some prostitutes offer to be punished as “bad Ukrainians”. It is also popular to have sex with a “Ukrainian girl”. These are extremely worrying trends, as Russian civilian women are repeatedly raped in Ukraine.
Grenade in the brothel
Some suitors who have been to the front show erratic behavior. A group of soldiers went on vacation in the Russian metropolis of Saint Petersburg. According to a prostitute, someone had a grenade with him and threatened to detonate it. The sex workers were very scared.

A sex worker compares this attitude to that of IS terrorists. “He said he was going back, that he had to defend his homeland. He wasn’t crazy,” she described one of her suitors.
“Hell of the Earth”
Other soldiers, on the other hand, report that they have fought in the war and do not want to go back because it is hell on earth there. But they also see no way out. For them, the brothels are a welcome distraction from the horrors they have endured. The prostitute accepts them as they are and shows understanding. So everything is fine again, at least for a short time. “And that has nothing to do with politics, it is about something very personal and intimate,” another sex worker sums up.
