It is currently hotter than hot in the Mediterranean, with one record beating the other. This may motivate tourists in the future to go on holiday in the spring or autumn or to choose another destination.
For example, data from the European Travel Commission (ETC) shows that the number of people wanting to travel to southern Europe from June to November has already fallen by 10 percent compared to the previous year, when scorching weather led to droughts and wildfires.
On the other hand, countries such as the Czech Republic, Denmark, Ireland and Bulgaria are showing great interest. “We expect unpredictable weather conditions to have a greater impact on the choices of European travelers in the future,” said ETC Director Miguel Sanz. A report from the industry association also found that 7.6 percent of travelers see extreme weather events as their main concern when traveling between June and November.
But: great desire to travel
However, after the end of the pandemic, the desire to travel this summer is unbroken and stronger than in the previous year. “British people in particular have booked fewer holidays at home and more in the Mediterranean, often many months in advance, as they continue to crave beach trips after the lockdown,” says Sean Tipton of British travel agency group ABTA.
Meteorologists expect temperatures in the coming week to surpass the current European record of 48.8 degrees Celsius, set in Sicily in August 2021.
