On Tuesday evening, huge storms once again passed over western and southern Austria, causing extensive and serious damage. It started in the afternoon in Tyrol – there were wind gusts with a speed of up to 161 km / h. Roofs were covered, hail and rain led to railway and road closures. Due to technical defects, hikers in the Stubaital and Zillertal got stuck in gondolas on their way up.
Hikers were trapped in mountain railways
The storms then moved on during the night in the direction of Salzburg and Styria. Here, too, chaos prevailed on the mountains: cable cars and gondolas stood still and were out of action. 157 hikers were trapped in the huts in Pongau and Pinzgau for a long time and had to be brought to safety by the emergency services. Children were also present at the incident. One person was slightly injured.
Power outages and covered roofs
In Carinthia, storms also cause power outages for thousands of households. Strong gusts of wind covered parts of the roof of a hotel in Velden in the Villach district. About 250 square meters of sheet metal and wood were ripped from the building. The debris landed in the parking lot and damaged three parked hotel guests’ vehicles. Due to the continuous rain, the water entered the upper hotel rooms. On Tuesday the roof was sealed as well as possible with foil.
Showers return in the afternoon
There is still a chance of severe weather in Austria on Wednesday. Especially in the south. In the morning there are already some rain showers and thunderstorms. In the morning the showers in the country decrease again and the sun comes out every now and then. In the afternoon there will be significantly more thunderstorms – most of them in the mountains and in the south. Storms are also possible. The daily maximum temperatures are between 26 and 33 degrees.
