The works, which will start on August 1 and have a budget of more than six million euros, have “extreme priority to ensure the safety of those who use these roads,” said María Ubarretxena, Deputy for Road Infrastructure.
The Gipuzkoa Provincial Council will begin operations on August 1 stabilization and rehabilitation of the viaduct of the GI-20in the San Sebastián district of loiolawhich has two causeways over the Urumea River and, in andoainon the viaduct that is located after kilometer point 444 of the NI.
At a press conference, the deputy of Road Infrastructure said, Maria Ubarretxena, has presented these works, highlighting their “complexity and scope”. “In the case of both viaducts, we are approaching the end of the useful life cycle of these infrastructures and it is necessary to carry out priority works to eliminate possible risks arising from the use and erosion of the roads,” he explained .
In the case of the GI-20 gone as it passes through the San Sebastián neighborhood loiola, the viaduct “will require extensive restoration, as studies have shown”, the regional deputy has had influence. As detailed, the first phase corresponds to the sheeting works. The Department of Road Infrastructure started drafting the comprehensive restoration project for the entire viaduct two years ago, “nevertheless, the studies carried out for this design have shown the need for shoring work prior to the Urumea section, as the bridge was built in 1972 and at some points traffic and estuary erosion have caused significant deterioration,” he said.
These first works will start on August 1, have a budget of 4,840,000 euros and will have a six-month implementation period. On the other hand, the final work “will begin within a period of four years, and preparations for the new project will begin in the fall,” he continued.
To carry out these works, it is not necessary to interrupt the circulation of light vehicles. Instead, heavy traffic over 3.5 tons will be banned, including public transport.
Regarding the viaduct located in the kilometer point 444 of the NIin the southern entrance of andoainrehabilitation works will be carried out to raise the platform from the road and rehabilitate the deck and adjust its supports.
Dating from 1976, this bridge is also one of the points that supports the heaviest and most unusual traffic in the entire territory. Therefore, it is essential to tidy up the whole structure. “The board to be rehabilitated measures 28 meters and the works will take four months, with a budget of 1,614,000 euros,” said Ubarretxena.
The deputy explained that it is also a “delicate” intervention, as “the board will be raised with jacks and the operators will work under the board.”
On August 1, a bypass of 300 meters will be constructed in this section throughout the month, which will cause retention. During the day, between 06:00 and 22:00, the passage of lorries weighing more than 3.5 tonnes is also prohibited.
