Propaganda goes crazy – Moscow shocked by “Zaporizhia vegetables”

Date:

The gastronomic festival, which roughly translates as “Flavours of Russia 2023”, has just taken place in the Russian capital Moscow. The “Southwestern Russian cuisine” offered there is now causing great commotion and horror, for which, for example, the “Donetsk schnitzel” or “Saporischschja-like vegetables” were specially invented.

While the Ukrainian counter-offensive is currently underway and new horror reports continue to pour in from the war-torn country, Russian propaganda seems to have lost all connection with reality. As part of a pompous “festival”, people in the bustling metropolis of Moscow were offered to try dishes from the “new regions” now.

By “new regions” we mean those areas that Russia has occupied in its neighboring country and where terrible things are happening. The inhabitants of the capital, who are considered spoiled in the land of Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin, should not worry about this, otherwise, as is known, trouble will arise. They better try the “new” dishes from the “new” regions. The fact that these are off the cuff fictional doesn’t seem to matter. There were “Donetsk Schnitzel”, “Khersoner Grillhendl”, “Luhansk Appetizer” or “Cookies with Luhansk Honey” to try.

A pork schnitzel is offered as the “Donezker Schnitzel”, which is topped with a “special” breadcrumbs – nothing specific is mentioned – and spices. The “Khersoner Grillhendl” is marinated in sour cream and paprika. The “Luhansker Appetizer” consists of rye bread, bacon, meat spread and pickles. The “Zaporizhia-style vegetables” included grilled peppers, tomatoes, eggplant and zucchini and were hopefully not grown near the power plant, as bad gossip has suggested.

The annexation of Crimea changed the food market
A lot has already changed on the Russian food market after the illegal annexation of the Ukrainian Black Sea peninsula of Crimea in the spring of 2014. On the one hand, due to the extensive sanctions that made the largest country in the world in terms of surface area suffer significant culinary losses, among other things. For example, sometimes cheese was only on the shelves at highly inflated prices. The Kremlin countered this with “apples from Crimea” or oysters or lobsters from the peninsula.

“Patriotic Fantasies”
Radio Free Europe journalist Pavel Syutkin noted that there had already been patriotic efforts in this direction in the Soviet Union. However, at that time the only target was vodka, which was revered as a “Russian invention”. Today, the spectrum of “patriotic fantasies” is wider. Because today there are “great Russian cheeses, which are said to have been made by simple Russian peasants under Prince Vladimir, and Russian pies, which are said to have laid the foundations of the whole world gastronomy,” the expert criticized. And there are many more such crazy inventions through propaganda, Syutkin assured.
