In response to threats from Moscow, Ukraine plans to crack down on ships calling at Russian-controlled Black Sea ports. The new regulation will apply from midnight local time (23:00 CEST). Earlier, Russia threatened to attack ships calling at Ukrainian ports.
The defense ministry pointed out in Kiev on Thursday that such vessels could be considered as carrying “cargo for military purposes”.
In addition, the earlier security guarantees were withdrawn by Moscow. Passage through the Kerch Strait to the Sea of Azov on the Russian-occupied Black Sea peninsula of Crimea has been banned since 5 a.m. local time (4 a.m. CEST), Ukraine’s defense ministry said. Corresponding navigation announcements had already been published.
The ministry also recalled the Russian cruiser Moskva, which was sunk by missiles more than a year ago. The Ukrainian navy has repeatedly used naval drones against ships of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet and, presumably, against the bridge to the Crimea peninsula. Homemade and Western missiles can hit targets about 300 kilometers away. Own production should even have a range of 500 kilometers.
Kiev is responding to a Russian threat that after the end of the grain deal, Russia will consider all ships calling at Ukrainian ports as legitimate targets.
