Law planned – Italy’s Greens want to punish climate change deniers

Date:

Italian Green Party leader Angelo Bonelli plans to introduce a bill to criminalize climate change denial. Bonelli says he thinks the Italian government around Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is guilty of downplaying the effects of climate change.

Bonelli accused Meloni of running “a denial government” that doesn’t care about the climate. In Italy alone, more than €10 billion in damage was caused by extreme climate events this year, in addition to the €5.6 billion lost to the agricultural sector last year due to floods and droughts.

Major damage caused by extreme weather conditions
“Italy has become a climate hotspot, with a growing range of extreme weather events wreaking havoc across the country. Violent storms with hail the size of tennis balls this week destroyed homes, cars and crops in Veneto and Trentino, injuring 110 people, while record temperatures of more than 40 degrees were reached in southern and central Italy,” said MEP Bonelli.

Legal cabinet against parts of EU Green Deal
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni recently emphasized that her government is by no means denying the reality of climate change, but wants to achieve sustainability with a “pragmatic approach”. Your legal cabinet has spoken out against some parts of the EU Green Deal, such as B. against the Green House directive to increase energy efficiency and the proposed ban on the sale of carbon-emitting petrol and diesel vehicles from 2035.
