The well-known Austrian artist Georg Planer moved from his studio at Lake Millstätter See to the mountains of the Carnic Alps in southern Austria to create the largest stone sculpture in the republic right on the shore of Lake Wolayersee. An oversized, new Julius Kugy monument.
The name Julius Kugy is known to many mountaineers and nature lovers, as he is considered the leading figure of the Alpine-Adriatic idea in the tripoint of Carinthia, Slovenia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia (Italy). Julius Kugy (1858 – 1944) was a mountaineer, writer and botanist with Carinthian roots and is considered the inventor of the Julian Alps. In his honor, the Carinthian Alpine Club has commissioned the renowned sculptor Georg Planer to erect a memorial and peace stone on the “Julius Kugy Alpine Trail”.
