When a fire broke out in an apartment in Jenbach – as reported – a firefighter who arrived first on the scene became a hero and probably saved a girl’s life. Further investigations are underway into the cause of the fire.
Dramatic scenes unfolded around 3 p.m. on the first floor of an apartment building in Jenbach. A fire broke out in a storage room. “When the residents said they had noticed the fire, they fled the apartment,” police said. Two witnesses (23 and 41) noticed the fire and rushed to the rescue.
“I saw the girl in the corner of my eye”
Florianis was already there before the fire brigade arrived. “Comrades have provided first aid with fire extinguishers. They couldn’t because of the heat,” says commander Alexander Aschenwald. Florian Dokus, who became a hero, was also in the middle. Just as he was about to leave the smoky apartment, he made a discovery: “Out of the corner of my eye I saw a girl coming out of the living room. I then brought her out.”
The girl was probably looking for a cell phone. But Dokus didn’t hesitate for a moment and played it safe: “Fortunately it was right by the front door, but because everything was smoky, I don’t know if the girl would have gotten out safely.”
The fire brigade had the fire under control
Wearing heavy respiratory protection, it was finally possible to penetrate the apartment and prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the building. Innio’s company fire brigade came to support. The family was taken care of. The mother ended up in the hospital with suspected smoke inhalation, as did the two helpers.
Countless conversations instead of holidays
For the family, who actually wanted to go on holiday on Sunday, it was a real shock, as BM Dietmar Wallner explains: “I have already called my father. They are divided into three households for the weekend. The youngest are with their parents, the others stay with relatives.”
It should become clear on Monday how to proceed. Wallner: “The apartment is currently uninhabitable. We then talk about a replacement apartment and what the renovation looks like. Two years ago we had a case like this, where a family was also affected. We must first discuss with the bank how to proceed with a call for donations.”
Further investigations are underway
The exact cause of the fire is still unclear. But as the researchers say, a child could have been the cause: “Based on information from the family, it cannot be ruled out that a minor child with a lighter found by chance may have contributed to the fire.” Property damage is likely to be massive.
