Even if 60 percent of the daily energy requirement in the Therme Wien is generated by the thermal springs, the operating costs explode.
Saunas and swimming pools will first have to believe in electricity or gas shortages. They are at the top of the municipalities’ energy-saving emergency plans. Of course, the Therme Wien is also an energy guzzler. “Right now, we generate about 60 percent of our heat needs from thermal sources. The other 40 percent is covered by district heating,” says the wellness company in Oberlaa.
Double energy costs
After district heating confirmed the huge price increases from September 1 (plus 92 percent!) on Monday, the subsidiary of Wien Holding also faces significant additional costs – double the energy costs for the 75,000 square meter thermal baths, whose room temperature is between 28 and 30 degrees is heated, while the water surface of 4000 square meters is warm to 36 degrees. Several spa locations in Austria have already announced an increase in their entrance fees due to the explosion in energy costs.
Operator demands compensation
The Therme Wien does not rule out this at the question of “Krone”: “However, the current and yet to be expected increases in energy costs cannot be fully reflected in the entrance prices”, the statement reads. “Alternative measures are needed here, such as aligning VAT to the level of the hotel industry or refunding energy taxes.”
High day ticket prices
Not a rosy outlook for fall and winter, as even higher entrance fees will also lead to a drop in visitors. Last winter, a day ticket for an adult including a cabin cost no less than 34 euros.
