At least 15 people have died and 19 others are missing in a ferry accident off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. The ferry, with about 40 people on board, was underway in Buton Tengah province when it capsized around midnight (local time). Six passengers were rescued.
The search teams used numerous boats and underwater cameras to locate the missing persons. The cause of the accident is still unclear. According to the authorities, the weather was good and the waves were moderate.
Shipwrecks are common in Southeast Asian Indonesia. In the country of about 17,000 islands, most people rely on ferries for transportation. However, safety standards are often not met and the ferries are usually overcrowded.
