The World Health Organization is concerned about nicotine addiction in Germany and the insufficient government measures against it. Cigarettes would have to become considerably more expensive in order to absorb the annual costs of health damage caused by smoking.
Rüdiger Krech, director of health promotion at the WHO, also has a concrete suggestion: 23 euros per pack! According to bild.de, Krech estimates the annual health care costs in our neighboring country at 97 billion euros. However, only EUR 15 billion would be collected from the tobacco tax.
Germany as a problem child in Europe
Incidentally, a pack of fags in Ireland costs more than 15 euros. The country is also considered a role model in the fight against nicotine addiction and ranks first on the so-called Tobacco Control Scale, which reflects the implementation of legal tobacco control in 37 European countries. Germany is considered a problem child at number 34.
Protection against non-smokers in Austria is rated as good
By the way, Austria is in 26th place. The Alpine Republic gets the most points for the smoking bans in public buildings and restaurants that have been in force since 2019. However, the WHO critically notes that the prices and levies are too low. A similar requirement as for Germany could therefore also apply to Austria.
