The residents of the Welzenegg district in Klagenfurt were startled by a loud bang on Sunday morning. An underground transformer had exploded.
“Near the church is an underground transformer of the E-Werk of the municipal utility company. Due to the still high groundwater, there was a short circuit and an explosion,” explains manager Hellmut “Luigi” Unterluggauer of the Klagenfurt fire brigade, who therefore alarmed by the residents.
The power outage for part of Welzenegg did not last long. The employees of Stadtwerke were also ready to provide a bridging line as quickly as possible. Subsequently, a pump was installed that currently maintains the groundwater level, so keeps the groundwater level low.
The transformer is being repaired. The employees of the Stadtwerke take care of the work that is still needed. Due to the recent storms, there are still problems with the high water table in parts of Klagenfurt. Fortunately no one was injured.
