War in Ukraine – Papal envoy: EU is not doing enough for peace

Date:

The Pope’s Peace Representative to Ukraine is working tirelessly to end the war. After visits to Kiev, Moscow and Washington, a trip to Beijing is imminent. Cardinal Matteo Zuppi is now calling for more EU efforts.

“She is doing far too little, she should be doing much more,” Zuppi told the Milan online portal “Il Sussidiario” on Sunday. The EU must support peace initiatives in every possible way. In this regard, the 67-year-old Italian underlined the role of the Orthodox churches in the conflict. “I would like them to become instruments of peace and find ways of dialogue,” Zuppi said.

“Peace cannot be achieved with weapons”
The cardinal has been in office as peace commissioner since May and stressed that so far all his interlocutors wanted peace. Unfortunately, however, the arguments of the different parties are very different.

“These differences should not cause us to lose clarity of responsibility — of the aggressor and the attacked,” Zuppi said. Peace cannot be achieved with arms, but with dialogue.
