Milan and Venice – Against gangs of thieves: when citizens go hunting

Date:

Crowds of tourists pass through popular cities such as Barcelona, Venice and Milan. At the same time, pickpocketing is on the rise. Enraged citizens themselves formed the hunt for eastern gangs, which mainly used young girls and pregnant women. The thieves are filmed with their smartphones and posted on the internet. Two representatives of these vigilante groups describe the “unacceptable conditions” facing the “Krone” and why the hands of the police are tied.

It is warm in Venice these days. Things get tight at the vaporetto station on the Grand Canal. Everyone wants to go to St. Mark’s Square, pushing and shoving on the bus boat: “These are the moments that pickpockets mainly take advantage of,” says 57-year-old Venetian Monica Poli of the “Krone”. Since catching and filming criminal gangs in the act, her videos have been a hit on the internet (see below). 270 kilometers west of the lagoon city, Lazza Ramo starts his ‘shift’ at 8 am. The 36-year-old pursues thieves in Milan Malpensa and Linate airports and in the metro: “There are up to 150 perpetrators a day, some of them already know me,” he tells the “Krone”.
