After the Indian space probe “Chandrayaan-3” successfully landed on the moon, its mobile robot completed its first “walk” on the south pole of the moon on Thursday.
The solar-powered rover “Pragyan” must now transmit recordings and scientific data for two weeks. It is largely unexplored territory.
Mastered the difficult landing at the South Pole
The day before, Chandrayaan-3 had landed as planned at the Earth satellite’s south pole. This makes India the fourth country to land on the moon – and the first country to master the difficult landing at the South Pole. Just a few days ago, Russia’s Luna-25 probe crashed during a similar attempt.
“Cheap” moon mission
So far, only the major space-faring countries of Russia, the US and China have managed to land on the moon. ‘Chandrayaan-3’ took almost six weeks to land, considerably longer than the manned US Apollo missions of the 1960s and 1970s. On the other hand, the costs of the Indian mission, which amount to about 68 million euros, are considerably lower than in other countries.
