Every year, 140,000 tourists visit the high mountain reservoirs of Kaprun. But not only the icy water with its fantastic landscapes lures young and old to the Alpine heights.
Surrounded by a total of nine 3,000-metre peaks, the winding and sometimes bumpy road meanders to the 2,036-metre-high Mooserboden in Kaprun. Already during the ascent, the view of the Pinzgau mountain landscape is overwhelming. But not only nature amazes visitors. The man-made wall of 107 meters high and 494 meters wide, which contains 57 million cubic liters of water, also attracts everyone’s attention.
“The power plant builders have done pioneering work,” says Tanja Janisch-Breuer, head of the Kaprun power plant group. As reported, during and after World War II, men from a wide variety of countries and social classes built Kaprun Power Station, which today is one of the largest hydroelectric power stations in Europe.
