On the sidelines of a Syrian demonstration, a glass door of St. Stephen’s Cathedral was also smashed on Sunday evening. The man was arrested; backgrounds are still unclear.
Several demonstrations paralyzed the center of Vienna on Sunday evening. Ukrainians marched around the Ring and Syrians demonstrated against the Assad regime at Stephansplatz. In the margins of this demonstration there was also an attack on St. Stephen’s Cathedral. A man armed with two hammers smashed the Singertor’s new glass door.
man immediately arrested
The police, already present in large numbers, were able to arrest the man immediately as he left the vestibule of the cathedral. At the request of “Krone”, the police did not want to reveal their age or nationality. However, the man probably suffers from psychosis, he was admitted – a connection with the demo is therefore unlikely.
Dompfarrer Toni Faber Montag personally wants to make sure there is more damage beyond the glass door. The ‘crown’ reached the head of the cathedral shortly before his return flight abroad: ‘Of course we are shocked. The church warden has already submitted a complaint and together with the fire brigade a provisional solution has been reached.”
Reliefs and sculptures behind the door
Explosive: Behind the glass door are valuable reliefs and sculptures that have just been restored. Previously there was a heavy metal door at this point.
