Who cleans this? – Huge amounts of driftwood washed up on the shore of Lake Constance

Date:

The shore of Lake Constance in Vorarlberg is currently in an astonishing condition: masses of driftwood have been washed ashore by the recent storm.

Anyone who wants to climb into the waters of Lake Constance at the Rohrspitz in Fußach will have problems, because a meter-wide carpet of driftwood has formed in front of the shore. The wood has been washed into the lake by the storm of the past few days and is now lying on the shore. It is still unclear what will happen to the wood afterwards.

Not entirely harmless
Many budget-conscious residents fish a piece or two of wood out of the water to light the stove in the winter. However, the quantities that are discharged as a result are minimal. Incidentally, these types of companies may not be completely harmless.

investigations are underway
In the municipality of Höchst, which was also affected, it is currently being made clear how to proceed. Discussions are ongoing with both experts who can remove the wood and conservation experts. Because the area is under protection and it must therefore be clear whether and, if so, which boats are allowed to enter at all. It is also made clear what consequences the many tons of wood can have for the reed belt.

Years ago there was a similar alluvial deposit of driftwood in Bregenz. But the coast is much easier to navigate there, and there was no bird sanctuary or anything like that. The community hopes that the clarifications will be finalized in the coming days.
